You & I are God’s heirs

My father inherited hectares of agricultural land from his father, who in the days of his youth had worked so hard to own such a valuable property that he later passed on to his children before he died. Luckily, I was still able to enjoy the company of my grandfather when I was very young; my parents, my siblings and I lived in the city back then, but my father used to bring us back to our grandfather’s hometown at least twice a year for a visit.

At those times, I remember accompanying my grandpa as he walks along his fields of rice, cucumbers and (sometimes) beans. Such a beautiful, peaceful site to see, especially that my siblings and I could always jump in the river next to the fields and swim. I can also vividly remember how my grandfather patiently nurture his carabaos by tagging them along to the mountains on a beautiful sunny day, fresh air and away from the noise of the city!

When my grandpa died, he naturally handed over his properties, land and carabaos to his 6 children, including my father. My father is still alive, but he decided to already hand over to us– his 4 children– ownership of the properties he had inherited from grandpa. When I first saw my name on the title of the land my father has passed on to me, I felt so privileged to be given such valuable property that I didn’t really work hard for. That privilege of being an heir also gave me that sense of belonging, oneness, trust and confidence.

And then I thought of God’s kingdom, which has no end and no boundaries. God is our Heavenly Father, and that means we are His children. Jesus Christ is God’s natural Son, but the Scripture says you and I can also be God’s children (if we allow it to be) and, therefore, can also be co-heirs with Christ. How super privileged and amazing would that be! It’s beyond material possessions. It’s much much more, I believe.

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs— heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”
~ Romans 8:14-17
