During this journey of mine with breast cancer, good friends and family members often asked how I am doing. All I can say is that it is well with me. Yes, my body may be weak and failing, but my spirit has become stronger than ever.

In my heart and in my mind, I know I am already healed because Jesus already died on the cross for our redemption, pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities, and by his wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53:5). And if I need to undergo medical treatments for my body to recover back to its normal healthy state, then so be it. That’s my faith talking, and so say the concerned family and friends who often reply back with words like, “Your faith has surely kept you strong and made you well. Keep it up.”

So what is faith and what it means to live by faith? The original Greek word for faith is Pistis, which has no exact translation in English but overall it means trust, reliance, confidence and belief. Hebrews 11 is a perfect chapter in the Scripture that can tell us more about faith. It also presents examples of ordinary men and women whose faith in God has made them extraordinary.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” (Hebrews 11:1-3)

“But without faith, it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)
